Sugar Bean Growing Recommendations

Planting Guidelines for Sugar Beans

  • •Optimal planting time: December to January
  • •Planting depth: 3-5 cm in heavy soils, 4-6 cm in light soils
  • •Row spacing: 45-60 cm between rows, 5-10 cm within rows
  • •Seeding rate: 50-80 kg/ha depending on seed size
  • •Plant population: 200,000-250,000 plants per hectare

Soil & Fertilizer Requirements

  • •Prefers well-drained sandy loam to clay loam soils
  • •Ideal soil pH: 5.5-7.0 (tolerates slightly acidic soils)
  • •Basal fertilizer: Compound D (200-300 kg/ha) at planting
  • •Top dressing: Ammonium nitrate (100-150 kg/ha) at flowering
  • •Responds well to phosphorus and potassium application

Harvest & Post-Harvest

  • •Harvest when pods are dry and rattle when shaken
  • •Harvest moisture content: 15-18%
  • •Dry to 12-13% moisture for storage
  • •Store in cool, dry conditions to prevent insect damage
