Step-by-Step Planting Guide

Follow these essential steps for successful maize cultivation from land preparation to harvest

Step 1
Land Preparation
Proper land preparation is crucial for successful maize cultivation
Step 2
Planting Time
Timing is everything for optimal maize yields
Step 3
Seed Rate & Spacing
Correct spacing ensures optimal plant population
Step 4
Fertilization
Balanced nutrition for maximum yields
Step 5
Irrigation & Moisture
Water management for consistent growth
Step 6
Weed Control
Keep fields clean for better yields

Common Maize Diseases

Recognize and manage these common diseases to protect your crop and maximize yields

Grey Leaf Spot (GLS)
High Risk

Symptoms:

Rectangular grey-brown lesions on leaves

Control Measures:

Use resistant varieties, crop rotation, fungicide application

Maize Streak Virus
High Risk

Symptoms:

Pale yellow streaks parallel to leaf veins

Control Measures:

Plant resistant varieties, control leafhopper vectors, early planting

Northern Leaf Blight
Medium Risk

Symptoms:

Long elliptical grey-green lesions on leaves

Control Measures:

Resistant varieties, crop rotation, remove infected debris

Common Rust
Medium Risk

Symptoms:

Small circular to elongate rust pustules on leaves

Control Measures:

Plant resistant varieties, apply fungicides if severe

Good News! All ARDA maize varieties have excellent disease resistance

Our varieties are specifically bred for tolerance to GLS, Maize Streak Virus, Northern Leaf Blight, and Common Rust

Harvest & Storage

Harvesting Guidelines
  • Harvest when grain moisture is between 20-25% for shelled maize
  • Cobs should be fully mature with hard, dry kernels
  • Husks turn brown and dry when ready for harvest
  • Harvest promptly to minimize field losses from pests and weather
Storage Best Practices
  • Dry grain to 12.5% moisture content before storage
  • Store in clean, dry, and well-ventilated facilities
  • Use proper pest control measures (admix chemicals or fumigation)
  • Regular monitoring for moisture, pests, and temperature
